Apply for the SRD Grant (SASSA Unemployment Assistance)
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) offers the SRD Grant, a temporary financial aid program for South African citizens facing economic hardship.
Introduced in May 2020 due to COVID-19, it’s been extended until March 2025. This grant provides monthly support to eligible individuals.
Who Can Apply for SASSA SRD Grant?
Before applying, ensure you meet the eligibility criteria:
- South African citizen, resident permit holder, refugee, or asylum seeker.
- Aged 18-60.
- Unemployed.
- Not receiving other government financial aid.
- Need more income to meet basic needs.
- Not receiving NSFAS student allowances.
- Ineligible for Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) payments.
- Meet the means test requirements.
Required Documents for SASSA SRD Application:
- Valid 13-digit South African ID (or temporary ID if unavailable).
- Proof of application for lost/damaged ID (if applicable).
- Proof of income or lack thereof (affidavits accepted).
- Marital status documentation (if applicable).
- Proof of short-term disability (if applicable).
How to apply for new SASSA SRD Grant
There are three ways to apply for the SRD Grant:
1. Online Application:
- Visit the SASSA Services Portal (https://srd.sassa.gov.za/).
- Register with your ID number, email address, and a strong password.
- Log in and select “SRD Grant for R350.”
- Follow the prompts, enter your details, and choose a payment method.
- You’ll receive a confirmation SMS for ID verification.
- SASSA will process your application and notify you of the outcome.
2. In-Person Application:
- Locate your nearest SASSA office.
- Apply for the SRD Grant in person.
- The requirements and process are the same as the online application, but you’ll fill out paper forms.
3. WhatsApp Application:
- Send a message to the SASSA WhatsApp line: 082 046 8553.
- Follow the instructions provided in the response.
GovChat Application:
- An alternative online application method is the GovChat app (Download the app from https://govchat.app/).
- Register using your mobile number and follow the prompts.

SASSA SRD R350 Grant Reapplication Process
Enter the cell phone number registered in your name and click “send SMS.” You will receive an SMS with a PIN. Enter the code and click on verify. Accept the terms of the consent form. Proceed to fill in your personal details and verify your credentials.
How do I check the status of my R350 application 2024?
R350 Status Check (All Other Methods)
- Open the SASSA app and create an account with your username and password.
- Now, navigate to the “Social Relief of Distress Grant” section.
- Now click on “Status Check for R350”.
- Input your South African ID number and application reference number.
Can I apply for my SASSA grant online?
Now, you can complete the grant application form and SASSA-generated affidavit by supplying the necessary information as seen on the web page and clicking the Continue To Next Step button. You will be directed to the SASSA Online Services website to upload the supporting documents.
Why is my SASSA R350 still approved but no payment?
If you haven’t provided your banking details or if there are errors, update them and select “Bank” as your payment method. Verify Bank Account Balance: Check that your account balance does not exceed the eligibility limit. If it does, this could be why your payment is delayed.
